20 years already!
Do you have any wish as to how we should celebrate this jubilee?
We all know earwigs.
Right now it's Fairytale of New York for me (r.i.p. Shane, may the streams of whiskey never run dry in your new world!!)
usually it's pretty neat one at a time. But when it comes to Irish music, things get crazy. I regularly have at least 3 running. at the same time!
However, I think tinnitus is EVEN nastier...
Here is our interpretation, a spontaneous recording when we were invited to the Charles Dickens Festival in Blomberg.

There's something about Dani's bodhran playing that's just mesmerizing. It's like he has this unique blend of niceness and wild energy that comes through in his music. I might not know much about playing the banjo, but when he's on the bodhran, it's like he takes you on a musical journey that's impossible to resist.

Don't worry, the drums are in flight cases or bags, there's nothing harmful about them, just tune them up every now and then to ensure they're playable. They're not just lying around, they're also used.
Have you tried storing them with a bag of charcoal? That can help with the smell I guess.

I guess those collector pieces can get severe damage from typical house cleaners, even though they have breathtaking aroma.

I am loving this bodhran/Irish music rabbithole I am going through.

The bodhrán tipper , is a crucial component in playing the bodhrán. Traditionally made from wood, the tipper is a stick used to strike the drum's head to produce rhythmic patterns and beats.
Crafted in various shapes and sizes, the tipper's design influences the tone and style of the music produced. Skilled players often employ a range of techniques, including rolls, taps, and strikes, to create a rich and varied percussive sound that complements the lively melodies of Irish music.
As an essential element of the bodhrán player's toolkit, the tipper's craftsmanship and material play a significant role in shaping the overall quality and character of the instrument's sound.

The HEDge is here!!!
The HEDge is not only the official successor to the reBELLion, but also goes a (big) step further.
Of course, the HEDge is VEGAN just like its predecessor. Not only because of the synthetic drumhead, but also because no other animal products are used in the drum. So no urea resin glue, no beeswax etc. No animal was exploited or even killed during or for production. Neither does the manufacturer (who is sometimes called HASE by his wife ).
The centerpiece is again the standard 14" synthetic heads, around which everything revolves. In the truest sense of the word. Because the eardrum can be loosened and replaced completely without tools and in a matter of seconds by simply turning the inner workings to the right. Putting the inner workings back in, small turning to the left, agree - done.
In comparison to the reBELLion predecessor, you don't even have to turn the drum over when changing the skin.
Yes, the attentive observer has already seen the same principle of changing fur on the SCHLAGWERK "NeoTrad" bodhran. But that's just because HED also designed the SCHLAGWERK Bodhran. When collaborating with SCHLAGWERK, the plan from the start was that I would use the same system for my own “noble version”. Thanks to CORONA, that just pushed you back significantly and now turned out a little different than originally expected.
Because the really big thing about the HEDge is the use of BAR ASH. What initially started as a special wood in my product range has now almost become my new standard wood. This is mainly because I always have to buy a whole trunk. Well, the wood is also nice to look at
Because the wood isn't that cheap, I had to come up with something that would allow me to make sensible use of smaller scraps of wood and rather average-looking slats. Together with the company SHAPER TOOLS, which has invented a really great CNC-supported hand router, we then worked on a puzzle-like wooden connection that makes it possible to produce stable and beautiful wooden rings from individual milled segments. So basically like wagon wheels used to be made. Just... nicer
So long story short, all frame components are made of ash and the frame is also CONCAVE because it not only feels great and gives a great playing experience, but also because it just looks incredibly sexy.
The tuning system is a compressor tuning frame with isolatHED tuning technology. The oval inlays made of super hard wenge wood hold the tuning system in place and enable the bayonet head change system.
The sound of the HEDge is truly in a league of its own, and not just in comparison to its predecessor, the reBELLion.
Although you can of course install 1000 different drum heads from 100 different manufacturers in the HEDge, the basic sound character is PRECISE, DEFINED, POWERFUL and, above all, given that they are not natural heads, very WARM and HARMONIC with a super long SUSTAIN.
There is no need to mention that the HEDge is extremely stable in tuning. But I do anyway
So all in all it's just a really cool drum. You just have to say that so clearly. That doesn't mean that my other drums aren't also super cool, but a drum that "despite" the synthetic heads and "despite" the vegan construction and "despite" the super sustainable nose-to-tail construction delivers SUCH a performance lays... well that's really spectacular. I think the fact that Stevie even sold his MOS2 concave to get a HEDge speaks volumes.
DERMOT SHEEDY says for example: “This drum is not just a vegan drum. There has been a huge evolution in bodhran making over the past few decades, this is the definite next step. For me this is the ultimate professional stage drum.”
Yes, and this is someone who has played the reBELLion almost exclusively for years.
Ok, so you see: a drum that you have to have
All information is available on my homepage on the HEDge page: https://www.bodhranmaker.de/seite/648349/hedge.html
And you can pre-order the HEDge (the first series is scheduled to be ready for shipping at the end of October) from Rolf Wagels in the online shop: https://www.bodhran-info.de/de/bodhrans/hedge
Thank you for your attention
Christian
PS oh yeah... why HEDge?
Quite simply... hedge... habitat for animals and good for the environment and so on. The name came from my wife after we (Rolf, Stevie and I) couldn't find a more suitable, crisper one, even with the help of the Proitze participants in February 23 and Chat GPT , HEDier and sexier names
I think that brand is worth checking out.

Is it just me or the bodhran really gets drowned out by the other instrument.

That's a good brand. You also have a good deal of tippers.
-
I'd like to see an electronic bodhran set-up.

Good luck and have a safe trip.

If nothing comes up, see you in Northeim!
Oh, then unfortunately the Irish Autumn in Proitze got in the way!? A pity...
He's got a lot of stops in his yours anyway. More power to you and your bodhran.

Hi Kerstin,
and welcome here.
The best would be for someone who has been playing for 2 years, a workshop like soon in (distant) Wendland or in autumn in (closer) Vollmerz.
Or you come to the Irish Pub Session in Oberursel (not even half an hour from you, and there are also participants from Hanau) at Mac Gowan's.
But it's only once a month, always on the 2nd Thursday of the month - so you just missed this one (yesterday!).With Kronberg, I'm probably the "closest" here.
I do give lessons from time to time, but more on the basics, because my own game is a bit "different".
But we can exchange ideas in practice.Best regards,
Andrew
Being in a pub trying to learn Bodhran is probably the best way to learn.

Hello everyone,
Here is a new and beautiful documentary series on the history of the bodhrán by Ruairi Glasheen:

Hello!
It's been a long time since I've been here. Recently I've been playing (bodhrán) again regularly, also because of a new drum….
current exercises; get fit again (this is already happening...). metronome work.
Drum Rudiments - usually played with two sticks - right = D & left = U (for me).
Favo Tipper; HR2 (crisp? - walnut), HR3 (bamboo), ME9, BrushMo (Macassar)
But the new drum also requires other 'racquets'(?), let's see.
LG,Dimitri
Hope to hear you play soon.

dear community.
Now I'm in the mood for a little chat (maybe you too) and I'd like to know what you're up to at the bodhran.
I think many attend workshops (whether online or face-to-face) and sometimes drive to a session.
but we also sit at home and practice in front of us and at the other end of the world maybe there is someone struggling with the same topic.
I'm just interested in what you're all working on right now and why.
the beginners perhaps at the correct up and down with accents in the places where they should come.
the next one is just playing in her new drum and trying to find out which notes are in which places.
and some super talent is training the reverse triplets and fastest tempo, because that's what the favorite tune demands.
and me?
i practice bass runs for jazzy pieces and polka patterns, which i got from micha 'back then' in the irish winter and which just don't want to slip.
forgetting that i have to keep practicing playing basic patterns for 15 minutes or repeating old game ideas. only for the routine.
so: tell me... let out frustration about unsuccessful things and joy about what you achieve.
your bina
Good luck on your folk music journey
